" The Honorable High court of Madras has admitted the petition filed by Vedanta Limited in relation to the Scheme of Amalgamation and Arrangement amongst Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd, The Madras Aluminium Company Limited, Sterlite Energy Limited, Vedanta Limited and Sesa Goa Limited and their respective Shareholders and Creditors on July 17, 2012. The returnable date fixed by the High Court for the final hearing for approval of the Scheme is August 27, 2012."

Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikas Yojana Rescripts Success Story
Jharsuguda: In the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination 2012, out of 137 students enrolled under Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikas Yojana (VVVY) Project, 98 students successfully cleared the exam with a passing rate of 71.5%.
Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikas Yojana (VVVY) is a visionary CSR project implemented by Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda in its ten peripheral villages - Gudigaon, Banjari, Katikela, Kurebaga, Bhurkamunda, Bhagipalli, Sripura, Badmal, Debadihi and Parmanpur. The project aims at improving the quality of education and moral standards and reducing the drop-out rate of the secondary school students between standard 8th to 10th by providing them supplementary and remedial teaching. Since its inception in 2009, the project has been witnessing remarkable success and recognition. This year the centres in Gudigaon and Bhurkamunda have had hundred percent of the enrolled students passing the HSC exams.
The incredible success rate of the project has given immense satisfaction to the students and community members and has raised their hopes for a brighter future. The students acknowledge the attempts and efforts of Vedanta and Anchalik Jana Kalyan Anusthan (AJKA) team members in the VVVY coaching centre. Mr. Gautama Behera, AJKA Head congratulated the students and expressed his happiness saying that the results are an outcome of the cumulative wholehearted efforts of Vedanta, community members, students and his team and they would continue working hard to improve the scores every year.

Integrated Management System Certification for
Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda
VEDANTA ALUMINIUM LIMITED, an associate company of diversified resources group Vedanta Resources Plc., has successfully accomplished its recertification of the Integrated Management System, harmonizing ISO 9001:2008(QMS); ISO 14001:2004(EMS) and OHSAS 18001:2007 at its Plant-1 unit, Jharsuguda. The Unit comprising of 0.5MTPA Aluminium Smelter and 1215MW Captive Power Plantwas Certified with the three management Systems in 4th of March, 2009 by Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS).

ISO 50001:2011 Certification for Vedanta’s
Alumina Refinery at Lanjigarh in Orissa.
Vedanta Limited., an associate company of the London Stock Exchange listed FTSE 100 diversified resources group Vedanta Resources Plc, became the first Mining & Metal Industry in the country to get accreditation for its Energy Management System for ISO 50001:2011 from the British Standards Institution, for efficiently managing the existing natural resources and mitigating the impact of climate change, at its Lanjigarh Unit in Orissa.
ISO 50001:2011, the international standard on energy management, seeks to drive the attention of Industrial houses to lay greater emphasis and focus on augmenting their existing energy efficiency. In other words, it is a carefully drafted and systematically presented framework for entwining energy efficiency into management practices so that the existing energy-consuming assets can be used in a better manner which will ultimately help in reducing levels of Green House Gas emission.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mukesh Kumar – President & COO, VL Lanjigarh, said, “With the obtaining of the ISO 50001:2011, VL aims to minimize energy consumption to a greater level. The accreditation for ISO 50001 also reflects VL's determined attempt in energy-saving green practices.
“VL is committed for overall area development & Environment protection. The Lanjigarh Plant is the only Alumina Refinery in the country having Zero discharge system and aiming to become the First Alumina Refinery in the world by developing Zero Waste road Map. It has already started recovery of valuable Vanadium from waste which is helping in reducing import of vanadium sludge,” he further added.
After attaining of the ISO 50001 certification, VL, Lanjigarh has adhered to a framework of stringent energy conservation and efficient natural resource usage policy which requires it to align its operations to four aspects affecting energy management such as; (a) Mitigation of Climate change, (b) World class Energy Performance, (c) Support BEE, Ministry of Power, Govt. of India and (d) Energy efficient procurement. Now its system has been certified as per ISO 50001:2011.
Apart from the recent certification, VL Lanjigarh’s environmental concerns are reflective from the constitution of a core EMS team which is primarily responsible for drafting the System Based Energy Management. In fact, the company has also trained 25 of its employees on EnMS – 16001 and 14 other employees as lead auditors through a reputed external agency.

Vedanta creates new National record in Vessel loading
Vedanta Limited, a subsidiary of London stock exchange listed Vedanta Resources Plc, created a new national record at Kandla Port in bauxite loading. The company achieved this feat along with the handling agent SVCT Pvt. Ltd.
The new record was created when 36400 MT bauxite ore loading was accomplished in a single day and 45500 MT in 36 hours by loading v ROSITA on 27th May, 2011 which is a new record for bauxite ore loading in any of the Indian ports.
“Vedanta is coming in a big way with more vessels and talking the challenges to break its own record,” said Vedanta officials.
Mr. HC Venkatesh Traffic manager, Kandla Port Trust conveyed his greetings to the Vedanta management on such marvelous performance.

The Ministry of Environment and Forest says No Discharge from Red Mud Pond in Lanjigarh
In response to allegations raised by certain groups claiming leakage from the Red Mud Pond at the Alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India appointed a high level technical committee from the Central Pollution Control Board and they joined representatives of the State pollution Control Board to visit the area and report.
The team visited the site on the 25 April 2011 and 17 May 2011 and collected samples from all the surrounding water bodies and from the Red Mud Pond to check for the presence of toxic substances. After analyzing all the samples, they submitted their report which is now available on the website of the Ministry www.envfor.nic or www.moef.nic and in the report below.
The report states that “No discharge was observed from the red mud pond or water pond or any outlet of the industry to Bamsadhara river”. The report also said that Vedanta Aluminum has adopted “good environmental practices’” and said it has “..very advanced processes and an environmental laboratory equipped with state of the art equipment..”
The Lanjigarh alumina refinery incorporates very stringent environmental standards. It is among the few Alumina Refinery with a zero discharge system and complies with all the air and water environmental norms. It has developed a zero waste road map with the help of many of India’s top scientific institutions and experts from abroad. The group is actively working on its implementation. The refinery has a state of the art online stack emissions monitoring system as well as a real time ambient air quality monitoring system to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
Vedanta Aluminum has adopted the highest international standards for its red mud disposal by adopting techniques similar to those developed by Toronto University for tailings disposal from other site in the metals and mining industry. This technique eliminates the risk of dyke wall failures due to hydraulic pressure or any overflow due to non retention of water inside the dyke. The red mud pond in Lanjigarh has been designed and certified by the Indian Institute of Science, Benguluru, the most reputed institute in India with a world-class experience in designing disposal sites around the globe.

Vedanta assures quality science Education at Orissa through Science College
Report by Suchismita Sahoo; Bhubaneswar: Today the management committee of upcoming Vedanta Science College organized a day long conference on "Emergence of Science Education" in the society at Lanjigarh.
As 21st century every human life is more dependent on technology the knowledge on scientific innovations is becoming essential for all of us . "Science education would not only help in getting employment but also will help us to enhance a quality life in science oriented society', said Prof. Arun Kumar Pujari, Vice-Chancellor, Sambalpur University during a conference. More than 200 students and faculty members from 15 colleges in Kalahandi and Rayagada participated in this conference.
The objective of the conference was to make the people conscious about the value of science education at degree level as well as to discuss about the proposed Vedanta Science College at Lanjigarh. Dr. Mukesh Kumar, President and COO, Vedanta Limited, said, "Vedanta Science College was a long pending demand of the people of Western Orissa. Vedanta is committed to create a state of art Science College that will promote quality science education in western Orissa". Quality Science education can help in developing technical manpower for industrialization in Orissa, he added.
The proposed Vedanta Science College will start its academic session from 2011 and will provide education in subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Mathematics, Zoology, and Environmental Science. As the local students of the region depend on Bhawanipatna, Rayagada and Bhubaneswar for degree level studies on science subjects, Vedanta Science College can make a valuable contribution to the local people around Lanjigarh,

Vedanta Hospital Opens Its Doors to the People of Lanjigarh
Lanjigarh will now have access to free basic and quality healthcare facilities as VL has dedicated the 'Vedanta Hospital' to the common people. For smooth and better functioning of the hospital, Health Cards were issued in the name of the family heads in the peripheral villages. The card holders will be subsequently issued with a Photo Identity Card bearing a unique code.
In addition to diagnostic facility and specialist consultation, the hospital will work towards creating health awareness in the community and will actively participate in all National Health Programs. The 'Vedanta Hospital' is equipped with modern facilities like Ultrasound, X-ray, lab investigation facility. TMT, Biochemistry, Immunology, etc. It has also 24 hrs emergency services and ambulance service available.

Self-employment opportunity for tribal women of Kalahandi
- The tribal women now can earn Rs. 2000-3000 each per month by stitching leaf plates
- Initially 150 women of 15 Self Help Groups will be engaged in the self-employment programme
In its effort to make the tribal women of Kalahandi self-sufficient and to enhance and support their livelihood, Vedanta Limited(VL), Lanjigarh distributed 45 sewing machines for leaf plates making at Rajendrapur of Lanjigarh Block. These tribal women, who were once biting the dust for the two times of meal a day, now can earn Rs. 2000-3000 each per month by stitching leaf plates. This became possible with the efforts of project “Jeebika” run by VL, Lanjigarh, under its Corporate Social Responsibility program.
These tribal women will collect ‘sal and siali leaves’ from the forest and will stitch the same into leaf plates. The plate has huge demand in local markets as well as outside. For this noble cause, VL has tied up with Non Government Organization “Unnayan”, who will handle the marketing of the leaf plates. Initially 150 women of 15 Self Help Groups will be engaged in the self-employment programme.
Dr. Mukesh Kumar, President and COO, VL, said, “Vedanta always try for the development of tribal area in Kalahandi as economic growth is most important. It is not possible for everybody to get engaged in agriculture, so industry will open options for their earning source.”
Jagdish Benia, Vice-Chairman, Lanjigarh Block commended Vedanta’s effort to uplift the poor and tribal people in the region. “All the development undertaken at our region was possible because of industrialization so we should wholeheartedly support it.”
Also present on the event were Phulme Majhi, President, “Unnayan”, several employees of VL and all the tribal women who will be making leaf plates in the early phase.
Earlier, a similar sort of program was organized by VL at Phuldumer village, situated at the foothills of Niyamgiri hills. The village is a habitat of Dongria Kondh people, who had never thought of earning Rs. 2000 sitting at home and doing their daily chore. Now more than 318 women of 10 villages in Niyamgiri region are earning more than Rs. 2000 each by selling leaf plates.

First Ever Dongria Kondha's Music Album Release in Kui Language.
A Unique initiative by Vedanta to promote the culture & tradition of Dongria
Kondha Tribe.
The first ever Kui Music Album ‘Niyamgiri ti Rani’ was launched here at Mayfair,
Bhubaneswar on 19th October, 2010. This is the first-of-its kind initiative to bring the
beauty, the rich cultural heritage, the music and the language of the Dongria Kondha
community to the limelight, by Vedanta.
The Dongria Kondhas are one of the primitive tribal inhabitants of Lanjigarh, in the district
of Kalahandi, Orissa. Kui, the traditional language of the Dongria Kondhas, has a rich oral
history that the elders of the community pass on from generation to generation through
their folk songs and stories. Dongria Kondhas, under the leadership of Jitu Jakasika,
pioneered the thought to promote their culture with their own music band.
Vedanta Limited is proudly associated with this unique initiative to promote the culture
and tradition of Kondha tribes of Orissa. The album comprises of eight beautiful Kui songs
composed by noted Oriya music director Manmath Mishra. The songs are written by Gopal
Melaka; and the singers are Jitu Jakasika, Ramesh Kulesika, Gopal Melaka, Stephen and
Biraji, Dongria natives of Lanjigarh & Muniguda.
Speaking on the occasion, Jitu said, "It's a dream come true for us. We have a long mission
to accomplish. Hereafter, we also plan to release a video album followed by live
performances across India to promote the culture of the natives of Lanjigarh."
Bijayaranjan Singh Bariha, Minister for SC & ST Development, Minorities and Backward
Class Welfare, Orissa, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Releasing the Music CD he
expressed his deep gratitude to Vedanta for taking an initiative to bring forth the hidden
talents among the Dongria tribes. He said that other corporate houses must emulate such
responsibilities that help build and preserve the rich tradition and culture of Orissa.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Siddhanta Mohapatra MP Lok Sabha Bramhapur and eminent
Cine Artist said, “Music and Art has no colour, creed or sect. Tribal Music in particular, in
any form reflects the joy that emanates from the heart of people.”
Dr. Mukesh Kumar, President and COO -VL Lanjigarh, reiterated Vedanta's vision for the
overall development of the peripheral areas of Kalahandi, where it is already operating an
alumina refinery. He said, "Vedanta will continuously support such endeavor to make the
tribal community self-sustainable. Culture is as important to us as socio-economic
development, which has been our top priority."
Other noted personalities from across the society, who graced this occasion were Odissi
Vocalist Guru Ramahari Das, Noted Odissi dancer Ms Aruna Mohanty, Dr. A. B. Ota,
Director SC & ST Development Institute, Orissa and Balabhadra Majhi, Former Minister
Govt of Orissa.
The event witnessed a huge participation from around 40 Dongria Kondha people, who
traveled especially from Lanjigarh to be a part of this Mega Event.
